clinton comes out for media diversity
In the brave new world being defined by the FCC, there will be more McMedia on our airwaves and far fewer broadcast equivalents of our favorite local diners.bill clinton in saturday's daily news
Unlike restaurants, the airwaves belong to us. We shouldn't give up our right to have more choice.
iraqi freedom?
free to be slaves to u.s. imperialism maybe!
U.S. military commanders have ordered a halt to local elections and self-rule in provincial cities and towns across Iraq, choosing instead to install their own handpicked mayors and administrators, many of whom are former Iraqi military leaders.motherfuckers.
in the meantime, bush isn't just stiffing our older veterans, he's stiffing the ones still in the field too! is this what happens when you double the military budget? i don't see defense contractors receiving spending cutbacks... and somehow still we're horribly unprepared for terror attacks.

moving on...
Well, Dean won the MoveOn primary, but not their endorsement, falling short of the 50% + one vote needed. He wound up with 44% of the vote (43.8something, but its being widely reported as 44.. 44.. 44.. 44.. 44.. 44.. 44.. ok enough already). Kucinich came in second with 24%, with Kerry a distant third at 16%. "Other" (2%, write-ins for Wesley Clark, Hillary Clinton, and Al Gore combined) managed to beat Lieberman (2%) by a hundred votes. Here are the Move-On statistics in case you want to check my math.

oh, the irony!
earlier this week, the international solidarity movement sent out an email announcement organizing for "freedom summer palestine," a festival of resistance to take place in the israeli occupied territories this summer from july through august. ism hopes to attract activists from north america and europe to travel to israel and join the palestinians in defense of their people.
yeah, ok, y'all know i've got mixed feelings on this shit...but i won't go there. i just wanted to point something else out... at the end of the email, the ism included the following quote by robert f. kennedy:
It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.nice quote, right? yeah, well, here's the kicker: robert f. kennedy was assassinated by a palestinian terrorist. i wonder how he'd feel about this...maybe he'd have rephrased to be a little more specific, like he who "strikes out NONVIOLENTLY against injustice," or something. geez. bad news for the buddha
india today declared that it now officially recognizes tibet as a part of china and told chinese authorities that it would not allow tibetan residents to engage in "anti-china political activites" within its borders.
while downplayed by the indian government as a reiteration of their already existing stance, this will surely strike a blow to the 100,000 tibetan refugees living in dharamsala, india, where the tibetan government in exile currently resides and mobilizes its independence campaign.
for more information on the plight of the tibetan people, see the tibetan government in exile website.

Don't be a Nurse!
Here at lovely Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vermont, we are now unable to surf Jakeneck because it is not business-related. However, us nurses, all three of us who are computer-saavy, are able to kvetch via Blogger (which isn't blocked) on our run-for-cover dinner breaks. Fuck this job. I am a nurse. I went to school for four years, am $22,000 in debt, and care, and this is how I end up: hating it. U.S. "healthcare" is a joke. Hospitals kill people. Nurses in theory are wonderful, helpful humans who prevent hospitals from killing people, but hospitals kill nurses, too. My personal advice to any of you who will be going - or who have a friend/relative who will be going - to the hospital is to either A) hire a private nurse or B) have a relative/close friend stay with you or stay with your friend/relative 24/7.
I am tired of pumping poison into people and giving people shit answers to their questions. I am tired of taking 15 minutes to answer a call light (I never thought that would happen to me, me being the nurse people complain about!). I am tired of making less money than I did as a waitress. I'm tired of being treated like a waitress.
I am putting in my notice on monday and my last day will be August 1st. FAHC can kiss my ass. (By the way, the FAHC nursing union signed their first contract today, whoop dee doo.)
If anyone knows of some cool rich guy hiring a personal nurse or of some groovy, zen, alternative health retreat high up in the mountains or on a beach, let me know. . .

Attention all citizens! Sex abuse of horses sparks warning! That's right, if you have a horse, make sure it's not on drugs and that it's genitals aren't mutilated. I know, it's a sick sad world but what do you expect when 30 year old men are having relations with 14 year old girls in Florida's most revered juvenile detention center. Ahh, why can't the world be a better place, like back when turtles breathed through their assholes? Oh wait, it is. Welcome back Mr. Lavarak! Girl with four eyes born in Nepal
By: UNI
June 10, 2003
Kathmandu: Hundreds of people thronged the house of Sitaram Chaudhary in Saptari district in eastern Nepal to have a glance at the new born girl child with four eyes, two mouths and two noses.
Shamvawati, 24, wife of Chaudhary gave birth to the girl child yesterday, reported an english daily Kantipur.
As news of the birth of such a child spread, people from far and wide rushed to Chaudhary's house to worship her as an incarnation of goddess Bhagawati.
''The baby girl is in good health and can see with all her four eyes and sucks milk with both mouths,'' said her mother.

burning flag day

Can you spot Nafta and Mobius in this picture?
Responding to a call for action posted by an anonymous network of affinity groups, well over 100 activists assembled Saturday, June 14, in NYC's Union Sq. Park, at approximately 2pm, to partake in an unpermitted march against the police state in America and throughout the world.
According to the philosophies of several attending protesters, a police state is, most directly, a nation or state that favors the surveillance, apprehension, detention, and incarceration of a nation's citizenry for political purposes. In America, it is an apparatus by which Constitutionally-protected rights and freedoms are repressed by state and federal law enforcement agencies under the pretense of creating public safety, and where those who struggle against such corruption become targets of the state's wrath. This "tyranny of good intentions" became most glaringly evident in the United States following the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, with military and police presence increasing in the public sector, and with the violation of several Constitutional amendments such as those protecting individuals from unjust searches and seizures, as well as those protecting their attorney-client priviledge, and even those of their basic rights to free speech and assembly, through legislation such as the USA PATRIOT Act and by the utilization of repressive police tactics enacted under the pretense of so-called Homeland Security.
Thus, in opposition to such injustices, several affinity groups and organizations had gathered in the park, and, soon after a brief spokescouncil meeting between the groups, and at the signal of three sharp whistle blows, a small contingent formed behind a large white banner reading "Remember the Constitution?" which depicted George W. Bush setting the Constitution ablaze with a small pocket lighter. The march then began when one activist set ablaze an American flag, either ironically or intentionally on Flag Day, and the group poured down Broadway past Virgin Records, towards downtown Manhattan. No sooner did the group enter the street than did the police begin to deter them, pushing and physically grabbing demonstrators and tossing them onto the sidewalk. "Who's streets? Our streets!" the protesters chanted.
When the contingent reached 8th St., they hung a left and made their way towards Cooper Square. When they reached the Cooper Sq. station, they halted and created an obstruction from the police with their banners, setting another flag on fire. From there they continued down 8th St. towards St. Marks Place. At 3rd Ave., the group again tried to take the street, this time with the police violently thrusting demonstrators into parked cars and up against buildings.
"Show me what democracy looks like!"
"This is what democracy looks like!"
After another short break at 1st Ave. and St. Marks, the group arrived at Tompkins Sq. Park where the police attempted to force the gathering into the park. "Don't go into the park," people shouted. "They'll just try to box us in there!" The police were becoming clearly agitated and their words alone seethed with aggression. The group rounded the corner at 7th St. and, as another flag was torched, the police obviously had had enough and made their move, attacking several members of one affinity group perceived to be the event's organizers, with one girl being clocked over the head by a police officer, and a young man being punched in the face several times after being dragged to the ground, though neither were resisting arrest nor exchanging fisticuffs with the officers. So much for "courtesy, professionalism and respect."
As four people were dragged away in plastic double-cuffs and loaded onto paddywagons, a bolt of lightning ripped through the park. The group quickly reassembled from the chaos, and headed back out onto Avenue A, downtown towards Houston St. It was only as the group approached 2nd St. that the police had finally caught up with them again, and by this time, a slow drizzle began. The group headed west on Houston, and then turned up 2nd St. As they approached 6th St., the police had created a blockade and forced the protestors onto 6th between 2nd and 3rd. The rain began to fiercly pour as thunder tore across the heavens and reverberated through the city streets.
The demonstrators were halted near the end of the block and suddenly 10 paddywagons rolled up, lining up along the street. The rain beat down upon the crowd. Some individuals were arrested, but most dispersed. Several others regrouped a few blocks away, with 20 or so finally reaching Washington Sq. Park, completing their march with no police interference whatsoever.
It was when they arrived at the park, however, that a police van began approaching and officers readied themselves for further altercation. But as the group entered the park, they discovered a huge Hare Krishna festival, with dozens of tents and hundreds of Krishnas rocking out to Hare Krishna hip-hop! The Krishnas invited the protestors inside, and gave them asylum from the officers, offering them a free vegan meal to boot.
The sky cleared up, and the sun came out. And they sat, eating their vegan digs, glaring right back at the officers glaring at them, smiling.
On a side note, those arrested were charged with: Disorderly Conduct, Wreckless Endangerment, Obstructing Government Administration, Rioting and Resisting Arrest. Talk about trumped up charges...

Comic Theater for Broke-Ass Heads
So yeah, we all know that New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Sometimes it's almost too much to deal with. Broadway tickets will run you $100 a pop, a family of four can't see a ballgame for less than $200, and a six-pack of 16 oz. cans of Miller High Life can run you up to $9, depending on the bodega/neighborhood. But every once in a while the city throws you a bone. A FREE bone!
Behold, Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. You might remember the name from the short-lived sketch show that ran on Comedy Central a few years back. Anyway, the UCB, which is essentially a home for emerging local improv troupes, offers two shows every Sunday night. The 7:30 show will cost you $7, but the 9:30 show is FREE!
Why is this significant? Because there are STARS in the 9:30 show. Real stars, like Horatio Sanz, Rachel Dratch, and Amy Poehler from Saturday Night Live, and Matt Walsh of The Daily Show, are all regular performers at these Sunday night shows.
UCB Theater is a nice, intimate space that holds only about 150 people, and the shows there are great. If you're interested in attending one of the free 9:30 performances, just drop by the theater at 8:15 the night of the show and take a number. They open the doors shortly before 9:30.
This is a chance to see some of the funniest comic actors in New York, hamming it up for the love of it. So enjoy.

bonnaroo cancelled
Planning for an event of such magnitude as Bonnaroo NE requires the highest level of cooperation and commitment from everyone involved in order to achieve success. We have investigated and analyzed the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of Field Day, as well as the atmosphere which the cancellation has created. After careful consideration, we are disappointed to announce that it is impossible for us to proceed and we must cancel Bonnaroo NE. We have determined that it would be irresponsible to the artists, to the festival goers, to citizens in the community, and to ourselves to move ahead with our plans given the circumstances that now exist.they were panning over the audience at field day with a camera, and taking shots of the crowd. best part (aside from when the ladies were flashing their breasteses) was when this guy held up a shirt that said "fuck suffolk." indeed, fuck suffolk.

dean's stance on medical pot sucks the big one
i like howard dean as a democratic candidate for president, but exploring his site, i couldn't find much on his stance on drug policy reform. after a little googling i found out that he vetoed vermont's medical marijuana bill while governor of the state. so i emailed his campaign about it, asking what his stance was, and got no response. then aphid turned this up this morning:
LO: In Vermont, you opposed a bill that would have given terminally ill patients access to medicinal marijuana. What was your rationale? As President, would you direct the FDA to objectively address this issue?in the meantime both nixon and carter had scientific studies conducted under federal authority which both concluded that marijuana should be completely decriminalized. hell, even after seeing a 400% increase in marijuana arrests during his administration, bill clinton told rolling stone he thinks marijuana should be decriminalized, as have dozens of other leglislators in the last few years. how much more money do they need to spend on tests? nowadays the only tests the fda do are ones that will either help push the product of a corporate campaign contributor through or illigitimize the medical use of perfectly safe, natural substances. the bush administration, for example, fires all researchers whose conclusions don't meet the administration's policies. so what's the fucking point?
HD: My opposition to medical marijuana is based on science, not based on ideology. More specifically, I don't think we should single out a particular drug for approval through political means when we approve other drugs through scientific means. When I'm President, I will require the FDA to evaluate marijuana with a double blind study with the same kinds of scientific protocols that every other drug goes through. I'm certainly willing to abide by what the FDA says.
i now have zero confidence in howard dean.
field day fucked
so the fucking nypd demanded that the promoters of field day pay for 200 cops to be on hand at the event, slated for this weekend, and since they couldn't afford it, they were denied a permit last minute. (besides, who the fuck wants to go to a party that's flanked with police?) now the event's been moved to giants stadium for one day only and more than half the acts are no longer performing, including many artists who i was bent on seeing, such as the roots, sigur rós, and thievery corporation, among others.
hrm... i'm not willing to pay the police to arrest my clients, therefore, i can't have a party. gotta love the logic.
i wonder if this has anything to do with enforcement of the rave act. and shit, if you think the rave act's bad, check out hr 834, which says that promoters and venue owners can get nine years for hosting an event where they "reasonably ought to know that a controlled substance will be used or distributed." as if that's not every single concert in america!
oh, and btwi'm going saturday and have access to an extra ticket for $90. who wants to come?

pot justice prevails! sort of...
ganja guru ed rosenthal has been found guilty of growing marijuana illegally under federal law. but since he grew it legally under california law, the herbal cultivator has received a sentence of one day in jail and $1,300 fine. it's not the expected acquittal, but it's none too shabby either. from homeless to ho-bag

jewel kirchner has departed the realm of taste, abandoning her role as a serious songstress for that of a slutty pop diva. her newest album, 0304, was produced by lester mendez, the man who made shakira, and replaces kirchner's unique voice and instrumentation with the hegemoneous studio sound of britney and christina. one look at her new video will confirm the artist's descent into madness, as see stands half-naked in front of a sign flashing dollar signs and the words "bling bling" and "big pimping."
never before has the word "sellout" had such visual representation.

Stop lying, stop cheating, and stop insisting that every single person in the world drink Coca-Cola ten times a day. Consumers have the right to keep Coca-Cola out of the elementary schools. Coca-Cola does not have the right to sell it there. And the right thing for Coke to do is not sue people to get into the schools, but invent a new product, a healthy product, a remarkable product that makes consumers’ lives actually better, and wait for people to say we’d like to sell it in schools. And they could do that, they just have to acknowledge the fact that Coke’s not going to grow the way it used to.seth godin, author of permission marketing in today's economic times

lies, damn lies
It's long past time for this administration to be held accountable. Over the last two years we've become accustomed to the pattern. Each time the administration comes up with another whopper, partisan supporters — a group that includes a large segment of the news media — obediently insist that black is white and up is down. Meanwhile the "liberal" media report only that some people say that black is black and up is up. And some Democratic politicians offer the administration invaluable cover by making excuses and playing down the extent of the lies.krugman goes for the juggular... more on this subject in the sunday herald

Please do not make any major changes to your website for the next couple of days, particularly in Plesk (if you have Plesk access), as we'll be upgrading our server to a much faster machine with more RAM and a much, much larger hard drive.
If you run a blog via Blogger, don't worry about it--you can keep posting. Anything that gets lost in the backup will be preserved in Blogger's database.
Those of you with message boards should be the most concerned. While the transition should be seamless, the potential of losing a few messages here or there is a good possibility. If you experience such, we will do our best to recover all lost messages.
Also, if you have spam filtering activated on your email accounts, I have to go back and do this by hand and can't remember everyone I've activated for, so please let me know who you are.
Again, I reiterate--this should be a seamless transition. You should not experience any downtime on your website or with your email, though honestly you may lose a couple of messages while the DNS propagates. fair and balanced
so much for balanced journalism. the fcc has voted 3-2 (that's 3 republicans to 2 democrats) to relax media co. ownership regulations, thus permitting say, fox for example, to own all the newspapers and tv stations in your neighborhood... if you thought the jingoism was bad before, wait til two or three companies own all the news outlets in america.
think about it: you're doing a research paper and you're exploring "verifiable sources." so you delve into the papers to find discrepancies, inconsistancies, and whatnot, between one article and another, on the same subject. but you can't find discrepancies. every paper, though they're five different papers, have virtually the same articles. they have the same quotes. they tell the same story. and they all cater to the interests of the private citizen who owns the paper. "hey, that evil company's not bad... they're my friends!" expect this sort of shit to become the norm.
"freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one."
[update 6/3] ted turner comes out against the fcc's ruling in the washington post
